Nubia Red Magic 5G Is Everything You'd Want From A Gaming Smartphone
Gaming phones and higher-refresh-rate displays have gone hand-in-hand. The ASUS ROG Phone 2 upped the game last year with its 120Hz AMOLED display. But now, Nubia has taken this to the next level with its Nubia Red Magic 5G that sports a 144Hz display, the first on a smartphone. And that’s not all, for a phone that is priced at CNY 3,799 (INR 38,000 approx.), the Red Magic 5G has a lot to offer.
To start things off, the phone is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 that we recently saw on the iQOO 3, the Realme X50 Pro 5G and the Samsung Galaxy S20 series (select markets). Accompanying the 865, there’s either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage.

Being a gaming phone, the Red Magic 5G’s hardware is accompanied with liquid cooling, thermal gels, copper foils and graphite. If this hardware package wasn’t enough, Nubia has also bundled in a 15,000RPM fan that will keep things even cooler during longer gaming sessions. There’s obviously an external vent with the fan that’ll dissipate heat.
But let’s talk about the belle of the ball, the display. The phone comes with a 6.65-inch FHD+ AMOLED display that has an industry-leading refresh-rate of 144Hz and a touch-sampling rate of 240Hz. Best of all, the display is free of any punch-holes or notches that might hamper the gaming experience for some. Oh, and the phone also retains the headphone hack that a lot of gamers would appreciate.
What is a gaming phone without shoulder triggers! The phone has two pressure-sensitive buttons that offer a touch sampling rate of 300Hz. And obviously, satiating the need of an RBG light, the logo on the back is backlit.
Talking about the back, the phone – like most gaming phones – steps away from conventional smartphone designs. The back has an X splashed across and comes in three colourways of Hacker Black, Mars Red, and Cyber Neon. In fact, there’s also a limited Transparent Edition that shows the internals of the phone in all their glory!
For a battery, the Red Magic 5G has a 4,500mAh unit with support for 55W fast-charging tech. In terms of cameras, the phone has a triple-camera setup that consists of a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, an 8MP ultrawide sensor and a 2MP macro shooter. For selfies, there’s an 8MP sensor up front.
The phone goes on sale in China from March 19 and a global release (possibly India as well) is expected to follow sometime in April.
